Rain Barrel Program Update Comments Off
The MWRD free rain barrel program has been very popular among Cook County residents, municipalities, and community groups.
As of June 2016, the MWRD has signed Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) with more than 65 municipal partners and Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with 16 non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Between January 2014 and December 2016, the MWRD will have funded and distributed more than 120,000 free rain barrels. The demand for rain barrels has cultivated a newfound understanding and appreciation for managing water in addition to providing the MWRD with an opportunity to provide many communities with a new tool in combating flooding.
Effective December 31, 2016, the MWRD will discontinue the free rain barrel program and will return to its prior program of selling rain barrels at cost on the MWRD’s website, www.mwrd.org. The MWRD will continue to accept orders for free rain barrels under executed agreements through December 31, 2016. All signed rain barrel MOUs and IGAs remain in full force and effect through the end of the year.
Any new municipality wishing to participate in the MWRD’s free rain barrel program for the remainder of 2016 must apply to the MWRD and have an agreement fully executed by August 31, 2016 in order to participate.
Thank you for participating in the free rain barrel program.
